Aiming for high sustainability standards with BREEAM certification

Lineage sites in Europe are being recognized for their sustainability efforts and energy efficient designs. Several of our sites in The Netherlands and the UK have been assessed using the BREEAM scheme and we are proud to announce that one of our facilities has been nominated for the BREEAM Award.

What exactly is BREEAM?

BREEAM – Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology – is a leading, internationally recognized sustainability assessment method for infrastructure and building projects. BREEAM certification shows a facility or building project has been verified by third-party experts to meet high quality and performance standards across a range of categories, like energy, land use, materials and ecology. Within these categories a project is assessed and rated for factors like low impact design and carbon emissions reduction; design durability and resilience; adaption to climate change; and ecological value and biodiversity protection.

Lineage’s BREEAM-certified sites

A number of facilities across the Lineage network have already been BREEAM certified for their sustainability performance. The Lelystad facilities in The Netherlands, for example, were recently awarded BREEAM Outstanding level – the highest levels of achievement possible, awarded to less than the top 1% of buildings.

And sites like the Vrieshuis Delta Terminal in Rotterdam Maasvlakte, part of the network of Kloosterboer facilities acquired by Lineage in 2021, are also being recognized for their innovative, energy efficient and ecologically-minded design through BREEAM certification. The Vrieshuis Delta Terminal 3 site has just been nominated for a BREEAM Award, and you can support their nomination by participating in the public vote. Vrieshuis Delta Terminal is a great example of what can be achieved in the cool chain in terms of innovation, sustainability and efficiency. Their sustainable cold store of approximately 10,000 m² includes three cooling and freezing halls that can be set to different temperatures independently of each other. The building is completely energy neutral, including operational energy, and the team took steps to improve biodiversity by working with an ecological team to improve the habitat for local species, adding insect hotels and plantings for butterflies and other species. The lessons learned from working with BREEAM standards on sites like Vrieshuis Delta Terminal 3 can be used to guide a green approach to development in future sites.

The high sustainability standards set by BREEAM are a great match for Lineage’s vision of a more energy-efficient cold chain. We look forward to seeing more facilities recognized and certified by BREEAM as Lineage advances towards the goal of net-zero carbon emissions and a high commitment to sustainable, energy-efficient construction across our network.
